Management of dry skin and eczema

This course aims to provide pharmacists with practical tips to manage dry skin and eczema and support patients in maintaining skin barrier function.

Learning objectives

  • Recognise the importance of the skin barrier function (SBF) and associated consequences of breaching the SBF
  • Recognise the importance of the skin microbiome and its role in maintaining skin health
  • Recall the prevalence, pathophysiology, causes, risk factors and clinical features of dry skin and eczema 
  • Recognise the key differences in clinical presentations of dry skin and eczema, as well as differentiate them from other similar skin conditions such psoriasis, urticaria and fungal skin infection
  • Recognise the impact of eczema on quality of life 
  • Recall the management of dry skin and eczema, including the treatment of acute eczema flare-ups and treatment during remission periods 
  • Highlight the role pharmacists can play in compliance to therapies and practical management strategies 

This activity has been accredited for 1.5 hours of Group 1 CPD (or 1.5 CPD credits), suitable for inclusion in an individual pharmacist’s CPD plan, which can be converted to 1.5 hours of Group 2 CPD (or 3 CPD credits) upon successful completion of relevant assessment activities.
